What to pack for a trip to Las Vegas, Nevada – Part 3

When the city of Las Vegas beckons me, it’s tempting to just hop on a plane with a credit card, a versatile black dress, comfortable shoes and a travel guide. It’s tempting, but I wouldn’t do it. Las Vegas has such a wide variety of things to do that you could end up anywhere, so if you’re like me, you’ll want to be prepared for everything. With that in mind, here’s a list of things you’ll want to take with you to insure that, like me, you’re ready for whatever the city has to offer.

#1) Daytime Clothes

When going almost anywhere in Vegas during the day, it’s true that anything goes. You’ll see tee shirts and shorts all around, but you’ll also see plenty of resort wear. When the rule is “no rules”, that means you should pack whatever makes you most comfortable. Jeans, light dresses, or shorts: just make it light and easy to pack. My uniform is a knit tee and a casual skirt that makes me feel decent anywhere, but the choice is yours. Do make sure that your shoes are comfy -this is not the time to break in new ones.

#2) Evening Wear

While the dress code seems to have relaxed over the years, if you’re planning on going to a show or a nightclub, you’ll want something dressier. Las Vegas locals dress up quite nicely to go out, though you will still see plenty of tourists that don’t bother to change. I always pack a nice dress that travels well and one pair of heels. Some of the more upscale restaurants require nice attire, so it does double duty. Men will want to have at least one jacket for the restaurants that require it.

#3) Swimsuits

Always throw in swim wear if you’re going to Vegas, even if you think you won’t need it. The pools in the city are world class, not to mention the fact that after an exhausting day of sightseeing or shopping, a jacuzzi dip might be the cure for your worn-out soul. Notice I used the plural? Trust me; you’ll want to be in the water enough to pack a spare. Remember appropriate cover-ups and footwear too, though some of the nicer hotels will have robes for you.

#4) Outdoor Attire

It would be a shame to miss out on a day trip to one of the nearby natural attractions because you didn’t pack for it. If you’re not normally a tee shirt and shorts person, make sure you pack at least one outfit that is appropriate for short hikes, and a pair of sturdy sneakers with socks to help protect you from scratches and potential bites. Make sure your clothes are light-colored if you’ll be in the desert. A light jacket is helpful when the temperature

What to wear when vacationing in Las Vegas, Nevada – Part 2

Las Vegas is a travel destination unlike no other. You can be as casual as you want, dress it up for a fashionable night on the town, or venture outside the city limits for outdoor fun. Depending on the reason for your trip and length of your stay, you will need an easy wardrobe to get you through, while also being prepared for a nice occasion.

No matter when or why you visit Las Vegas, the most important item in your suitcase will be a comfortable pair of shoes. More than likely, you will be walking a lot. Even if you decide to take a cab or ride the monorail to get from one casino to the other, walking is your only option once inside, and each casino is like a small city. You will take comfort, both literally and figuratively, in the fact that you have comfortable walking shoes, while other people are trying to make it in heels and loafers. The next thing you need to remember is the temperature throughout most of the year is hot hot hot, so a couple of pairs of light shorts and casual shirts will be a necessity. Keep in mind that most casinos are very cool inside, so if you will be inside for long periods of time, you might want a light jacket or long sleeve shirt with which to cover up. Also, the temperature is much cooler at night, so a pair of jeans or other pants is a good idea.

If you are on trip in which you plan on gambling most of the time, you might want to vary your wardrobe a little more. In addition to the basic items like comfortable shoes, shorts, and casual shirts, a nice outfit might come in handy. For example, if you hit a big jackpot or win a large amount of money, it is possible that a casino host will offer you a comp for a meal at a nice restaurant within the casino or even a pair of tickets to a show. Some upscale casino restaurants will not allow jeans and a t-shirt, so slacks and a jacket for a man, and a nice dress or suit for a woman would be more appropriate. Cut offs and t-shirts are fine for a buffet, but a nice steakhouse will turn you away in a heartbeat.

In addition to upscale restaurants, there are many clubs and ultralounges that will not allow casual attire. So if you plan on partying like a rock star, you will need to dress like one. Well, maybe you don’t want to actually dress like a rock star, but this means no jeans, t-shirts, or shorts. Plan on taking a nice outfit for clubbing.

If you are the adventurous type, pack some hiking shoes and cargo shorts because there are many activities to do outside the city. If you need a break from the bright lights, you can head out to the desert for mountain biking, hiking and other sightseeing. You will want to wear the appropriate attire for the outdoor activity you will be involved in, such as dry release shirts, thick socks, bike shorts, and a hat to keep the sun off your face.

Finally, if you have forgotten anything, or decide to change your plans once you have arrived, there are plenty of places to shop for clothes in Las Vegas. Most casinos have malls, and there is also an outlet mall not too far away from the strip. Enjoy yourself and dress comfortably!
