New Your City is a wonderful place to visit but to many it can easily become an expensive trip. This doesn’t have to be the case though. Let’s go through some possibilities to save money on you trip to New York City:

1. Hotels

Manhattan is the center of tourism in New York. Thus, the hotels on Manhattan are, while perhaps still more conveniently located, more expensive than what they need to be. Broaden your area to around Manhattan, for example to Queens (which in itself is worth visiting) and you can easily save a lot of money.

2. Transportation

To see New York City you’ll have to do quite a bit of local travelling, especially if you live outside of Manhattan (which is where you’re likely to spend most of your time). Most tourists take cabs due to their convenience but there are better alternatives. The locals use the subway, and there’s no reason why you shouldn’t too. It’s fast, reliable and on time, and stations are located all across the city.

3. Food

Cheap yet tasty food is easily found on the street. There are a lot of restaurants in New York City, some very much affordable, but don’t be afraid to try any local stands. Getting your food on the street is a great way to save money!

4. Things to see (for free)

As cities are usually free to enter, experiencing New York City doesn’t have to cost you a thing! Just wandering around is an experience in itself, but to have some goals to aim for, good and free suggestions include Central Park, Chinatown, ground zero, Brooklyn Bridge, Harlem, Times Square (best experienced at night), and so on. The Statue of Liberty is of course a must-see as well, but it too can be free if you take the Staten Island ferry from Battery Park (southern Manhattan) back and forth (which is completely free and will give you a good view of the statue from the water).

By following all the above tips you will save a lot of money. Perhaps you will even consider spending some of them on going up in the Empire State Building, which is the only one thing you simply have to spend money on. The view is fantastic!
