The history of the Second Avenue Deli in New York City

For over fifty years, the Second Avenue Deli has been an iconic New York City eatery. Originally, the deli was located in the East Village when it first opened in 1954, but the kosher delicatessen is now located on 33rd Street near Lexington Avenue. Although the restaurant is considered by many restaurant critics to be the best deli in the city, the Second Avenue Deli has been the source of much controversy, especially among the Orthodox Jewish community.
In 1996, the establishment was the scene of a heinous crime in which the deli’s original owner, a Holocaust survivor by the name of Abe Lebewohl, was murdered. The crime, which remains unsolved to this day, was the first in a series of setbacks which the famous eatery has had to overcome.
In the fall of 2007, after a bitter dispute over rent increases, new owner Jack Lebewohl decided to relocate the deli to its current location on 33rd Street in the Murray Hill section of Manhattan. When the deli re-opened in December of 2007, Jeremy Lebewohl, nephew of the original owner, assumed control of operations.
Throughout the history of the Second Avenue Deli, the restaurant has faced criticism by Orthodox Jews who resented the fact that the establishment was open on Saturdays, which is the Sabbath. Other Orthodox Jews chose to avoid the deli because they felt that the food, while considered kosher, did not meet the strict standards of kashrut law which dictates the eating habits of Orthodox Jews.
The Second Avenue Deli has also been criticized about the healthiness of the food; a subject which once provoked the deli’s founder, Abe Lebewohl, to scoff at. In the 1990s, Lebewohl attended a conference and got up to speak right after another New York restauranteur. “What am I gonna tell you?” he said. “My food will kill you.”
Many fans of the Second Avenue Deli lamented the move to the restaurant’s current location because the old location was home to the “Yiddish Walk of Fame”, a stretch of sidewalk along 2nd Avenue which pays tribute to the legends of Yiddish theatre such as Bertha Kalich, David Pinski, and Molly Picon.
Despite these setbacks, the Second Avenue Deli endures as an award-winning New York institution and a tribute to the resilience of the Lebewohl family. Zagat’s has bestowed the honor of “Best Kosher Deli in New York” to the Second Avenue Deli, besting notable competitors such as the Carnegie Deli and Katz’s Delicatessen. The Second Avenue Deli is renowned for its pastrami, matzo ball soup, and corned beef.
