Battery Park has become more or less a landmark for tourists every since 9/11. Located at the bottom of Manhattan, just below the financial district is skirts the site of the form World Trade Center and lends a decent yet distant view of the Statue of Liberty. It draws thousands of visitors each year.
History buffs enjoy facts and Battery Park has historical facts abounding. For instance, at the time of the War of 1812, a fort was built in Battery Park between 1808 and 1811. The fort was named Castle Clinton in 1817 after DeWitt Clinton, Mayor of NYC at the time. After the war, and in the many years following the area served as an entertainment center, an opera house and an immigration landing depot. IT was even the NYC Aquarium until it closed in 1941.

New York City is the largest city in the United States and is located at the southeast corner of the state of New York. There are five boroughs that make up the city, including Manhattan, The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island. This article is concerned with downtown New York, New York which is made in the southern part of the island and borough of Manhattan. It is located in the northeastern part of the United States, so it tends to get cold in the winter and summers are mild to hot.
The downtown part of New York City is the commercial and business center of New York, which is one of the main business centers in the United States. Besides being a business, banking, and financial center, and includes the famous Wall Street, it is also a great travel destination. Although there are more famous parts of New York City, such as Times Square and Central Park, the downtown area has plenty to see and do for the tourist and anyone coming to New York will want to spend some time in this dynamic part of the city.
There are two main public areas in this part of the city, although downtown, like all of New York, has plenty of parks. One of these is South Street Seaport, which besides being a shipping port, has a public boardwalk and many shops and restaurants. There is always something to do around South Street Seaport, so it is a place not to be missed. The other is Battery Park at the very south end of the city. From here there are great views of the Statue of Liberty, and. The World Trade Centers were just north of this park. You can also catch the Staten Island Ferry, which is a very inexpensive way to see the Statue of Liberty up close and tour the water south of Manhattan.
Downtown New York, New York also has many distinct and colorful neighborhoods. Chinatown, Greenwich Village, and Little Italy are all famous areas of this part of New York City. Each of these areas has its own flavor and feel, as well as great restaurants and plenty of choices in shopping and sightseeing. If you like Chinese food and culture, you don’t want to miss Chinatown. This is close to South Street Seaport so both of those areas can be seen on an easy walking tour.
Most of the museums and theaters are just a little north of this part of the city, but for history, walking through this part of the city has a lot to offer. The downtown part of the city is the oldest part of New York City, so a lot of the architecture, especially the churches along Trinity is very interesting and worth a walk. There are a lot of smaller museums in this part of town, however, including the National Museum of the American Indian and the Skyscraper Museum. And as mentioned, the World Trade Centers were in this area, so you may want to visit the memorial to September 11.
Keep in mind that while Manhattan is the largest borough and this part of the city is sometimes overwhelming, a visit to downtown New York, New York, doesn’t have to be confined there. The famous New York subway system will get you anywhere in the city very fast, and a lot of the rest of the city is within walking distance. Where to Get Statue of Liberty Tickets

When you visit New York City and want to visit the Statue of Liberty, there may be many places where you can get the tickets. However, there is only one official location for Statue of Liberty tickets and that is at Statue Cruises. This is the official ticketing center for visits to both the Ellis Island Immigration Museum and the Statue of Liberty itself. In order to reach both of these locations you have to take a ferry ride, which is why having the tickets in advance is of utmost importance.
There are two locations from which you can depart on this cruise – New Jersey and New York. The cruise leaves from Battery Park in New Jersey and from Liberty State Park in New York. There are several types of tickets that you can purchase at both locations:
- Reserve Ticket. This gives you access to both Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty including the grounds around both monuments. If you want an audio tour, this will cost an additional fee. With the reserve ticket, you have priority entry into the security area, which will save you some time.
- Reserve Ticket With Monument Pass. This type of ticket will allow you inside both monuments. At the Statue of Liberty, you can go inside the pedestal and see what the interior of the statue looks like. In addition, you have a 360?panoramic view of Fort Wood. Audio tours are also available inside for an extra charge. Even though you do have priority entrance to the secure area prior to leaving on the cruise, there is also a second screening before you enter the structure.
- Flex Ticket. This will give you access to the grounds only of both Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, with the additional option of paying for an audio tour. You can only use this ticket once and it is only valid for three days from the date of purchase. You do need to arrive early to ensure that you will get to take the cruise.
It is important to be aware of the ferry schedule for these tours so that you won’t have to wait in a long line or miss your scheduled trip. Depending on which cruise you choose, you also have to allow for specific period of time. If you want to see both monuments and spend time exploring the interiors, you should allow for a full day. The tour itself takes about 5.5 hours and this does not include the time you spend at the terminal in the park or the length of time it takes you to reach the terminal.
There are concession stands at both locations where you can purchase food and rink for the duration of your visit. Many visitors, however, choose to bring a packed lunch with them because of the long lines of people at these concession stands. Since these cruises operate all year long with the exception of Christmas Day, you should dress for the season and the weather.
