Before you go: New York – Part 1
I Want to Be a Part of It
New York! New York! The lights of the city that never sleeps keeps on calling you and you have to follow. But before you skedaddle there might be one or two things you might want to do.
First, always make sure you have your budget completely planned out. Do as much research as you can of hotel rates, taxi rates, gas rates, and how much food will cost you. Always leave yourself a little extra spending money just in case you stumble upon that little doohicky you just can’t live without. If you’re staying for a while in New York, even if it’s just vacation, you might want to check out surrounding suburbs for slightly lower hotel rates. Of course one thing that is fantastic about New York is its transportation system. Make sure to make full use of the subway, ferries, and the elevated train as all might be cheaper than a taxi.
However, another important part of coming to New York is what to expect. New York has a unique kind of independence about it. Its honking and bustling just shouts absolute freedom and exhibits American liberty like no other city in America. You must try to visit all of the highlights during your stay. But remember not to wear yourself out. Savor every part that you visit. Relax and take your time. Remember to observe as you travel from place to place. Walk as often as you can and take in the full meaning of the city.
The Statue of Liberty, Rockefeller Center, Central Park, Madison Square Garden, The Plaza, Fifth Avenue, Broadway. All of these are just a small percent of all of the fabulous locations for sightseeing in New York City. You will want to get full maps and brochures as soon as you get to the city.
However, in all this planning you must not forget to research where you should not visit. There are certain places in New York that might want to be avoided. This is nothing to be overly concerned with. There is danger in every place in the world, but it happens to abound in New York. Just use common sense. Do not do a lot of walking at night. Stay away from alleys at all cost. Don’t display your money at any time, and it might be wise to carry just a credit card. (You might still get beat up, but you’ll still have your money.)
Take plenty of pictures and make sure to see a Broadway show. Just remember to take it slow and really enjoy your stay. This city is the pinnacle of America’s success and it should be treasured and respected. So do everything beforehand that is possible to make your stay to New York the most intriguing and rewarding experience.
San Francisco A City Guide
Introduction
The City and County of San Francisco is the fourth-largest city in the state of California, in the United States. A consolidated city-county, mainland San Francisco is located on the tip of the San Francisco Peninsula. Insular San Francisco includes several islands in the San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Strait, notably Alcatraz, Treasure Island, and the Farallon Islands 27 miles offshore in the Pacific Ocean and also most of the privately owned Red Rock Island near the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge.
History
San Francisco has a long history of events marking its growth from a small town to a big city
• In 1776, the Spanish were the first Europeans to settle in San Francisco
• In 1848, with the advent of the California gold rush the city entered a period of rapid growth
• In 1822, serious development by non-Spanish speakers began, when William Richardson, an English whaler redeveloped a section of Yerba Buena in what is now Portsmouth Square in Chinatown.
• In 1846, the Mexican-American War broke out.
• On January 30, 1847, a naval force under Commodore John D. Sloat claimed it in the name of the United States and renamed it “San Francisco”
• On April 18, 1906, a devastating earthquake resulted from the rupture of over 270 miles of the San Andreas Fault, from San Juan Bautista to Eureka, centered immediately offshore of San Francisco.
• The city was quickly rebuilt after the earthquake.
• The phoenix on the city’s flag represents San Francisco’s “rebirth” from the ashes of the fire that resulted from the quake.
• In the 1950s San Francisco hired Harvard graduate Justin Herman to head the redevelopment agency for the city and county.
• Justin Herman began an aggressive campaign to renew blighted areas of the city.
• His planning led to the creation of Embarcadero Center, the Embarcadero Freeway, Japan town, the Geary Street super blocks, and Yerba Buena Gardens.

Las Vegas – Best Place to Hang With Family
Going to Las Vegas: -
Las Vegas is known as the best holiday destination. That is why most of the people with their families come out here to spend their break time in an enthusiastic way. This city is famous for its number of casinos and dazzling nightlife and also there are number of activities that a person can enjoy with his family members. It is interesting to know that the casinos are recognized as the best place for families to spend their vacations. The main reason behind this is that the casinos are offering a lot of family activities along with the attractions of gambling.
Major attractions of the Las Vegas: -
i. One of the major attractions of the Las Vegas is the High Roller where people can have a lot of fun and adventure in their break time. At the Stratosphere Hotel, The High Roller is known for its 909 foot high roller coaster. Because of this amazing height, this is the highest roller coaster in the whole world. That is why it is the major attraction of the Las Vegas.
The High Roller comprises of more than 800 tracks and that too with the sharp banking turns that can raise the hair of any person because it turns at an amazing speed of 32 miles per hour. The cost for taking this exhilarating ride is 5$ and is open for public daily. As the ride on such roller coaster the ride is so steep and high, some of the restrictions are enforced on the height.
ii. Another activity where tourists can spend their good time with their kids is the zoo. The Nevada Zoological and Botanical Park is known as the biggest zoo in the world and hence attracting many people worldwide. Kids can have a great time at this place. In this zoo, there are exotic species of birds and animals which include emus, ostriches, wallabies and flamingoes. But the most famous and attractive fir the kids are the chimpanzees. The tricks and activities made by chimpanzees are even praised by the older kids.
iii. Another place to explore is the deserts of the Las Vegas. A half day or a full day eco-tour at the deserts can be a great fun learning experience. Children came to know about the different aspects and features of the desert.
Despite of having so many tourist attractions, Las Vegas is famous for its beauty and the life of the people. That is why this place is alluring many tourists to spend their time in their holidays.
Hoover Dam helicopter tours run out of Las Vegas, NV
There are dozens of tourist helicopter flights out of Las Vegas every day and night. Several flight services cover only the Hoover Dam area, a short 20-minute hop from the famed Strip to the dam site in Boulder City, Nevada. Many other Vegas-based helicopter schedules include excursions flying several hundred miles from their Las Vegas airport bases to as far away as Arizona’s Grand Canyon, Monument Valley and Petrified Forest and to Utah’s Bryce Canyon.
Additionally, the more extensive helicopter flights offer varied combinations of interesting attractions, lasting anywhere from a few hours to several days. Some include such special services as intimate formal dinners for lovers on a flat rock overlooking the Canyon rim, champagne weddings in the air and overnight camping on the Colorado River bank a mile below on the Canyon floor. There are also helicopter excursions featuring Western ranch horseback riding experiences, exploring ancient Native American ruins and dozens of other exciting activities.
To narrow the selection down to Hoover Dam only flights, I’ve selected one that features mostly an eagle eye’s visit to one of the world’s most massive man-made structures. In-flight narrations will reveal to passengers that the dam is not only famous for its huge size and enormous hydroelectric power that serves hundreds of cities and farms throughout the West. Additionally, when it was built in the 1930s, at a cost of more than 100 workers lives, during the Franklin D. Roosevelt administration, Hoover Dam created an unexpected bonanza. The government funds and salaries of the dam’s thousands of fun-seeking construction workers also were essential in creating the glittering city of Las Vegas of today.
A typical tourist excursion example is the Las Vegas Strip and Hoover Dam Twilight Helicopter Tour. This trip includes, as most of the others do, limousine service from passengers’ hotels to McCarran Airport, where they board the helicopter for the two-hour flight. The trip takes in aerial views of the Dam and its Lake Mead surroundings. On the return flight, usually at dusk, the chopper lingers lovingly over the famed Strip and downtown Vegas as nightfall brings on the millions of brilliant lights and other Vegas nighttime attractions. The list price is $219.99. Code: 2280TWILIGHT.
As with everything else in Las Vegas, if you take the time to do some homework after you arrive, you rarely need to pay list price for the tourist helicopter flights to Hoover Dam or everywhere else. Before you book any Vegas attraction, always check with your hotel desk for discounts, as well as look for dollars-off coupons in hotel room magazines.

While the San Diego Natural history museum presents an exclusive collection of environmental habitats such as desert, ocean and shore habitats. Hotel reviews: Las Vegas Hilton Hotel

The Las Vegas Hilton Hotel is located on Paradise Road behind the strip. A sky-walk bridge connects the hotel to a giant convention center. The National Association of Broadcasting (NAB) and other organizations that need a lot of space use the convention center for their conferences. The room rates are more expensive during some of these conferences.
Booking a room on-line via the Las Vegas Hilton Website is convenient. You can choose a basic room, a larger room with more amenities, or a room that gives you access to the resort club lounge. The basic rooms are small and clean. The larger rooms are more expensive, have nicer linen, and more amenities, such as robes and slippers. The resort club lounge is open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. and offers snacks, drinks, and a view from the 24th floor of the hotel. Beer and wine is available from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Paying extra for resort club lounge access was not cost effective for us. We did not find time to go to the resort club lounge on most days and the selection of beer was limited.
Parking, checking in, and checking out are convenient. Parking is free. There is a large parking structure and two lots that are close to the hotel. Checking in is quick and easy at the front desk. Checking out can be done quickly through the television.
The Hilton is a good place to stay if you are a Star Trek or Barry Manilow fan. There is a Star Trek museum with a simulator ride. Barry Manilow was performing during our stay. There was a store full of Barry Manilow merchandise.
People who like to exercise may enjoy the swimming pool, tennis courts, or golfing at the Las Vegas Country Club. The swimming pool is on the third floor and towels are provided. There are six tennis courts and a tennis pro who gives lessons. The Las Vegas Country Club is a private course located next to the Hilton. The concierge at the Hilton can make a tee time for guests who are staying at the Hilton Hotel.
The Hilton has a large casino, a food court, many nice restaurants, and a nice theater. The casino offers all the usual games and slot machines. The food court has pizza, ice cream, and other fast food. Diners have a wide variety of restaurants to choose from including Benihana, Garden of the Dragon, Hacienda Margarita, TJs Steakhouse, and a buffet. Hacienda Margarita is a casual Mexican restaurant with reasonable prices and large portions of food. Garden of the Dragon serves Chinese food and costs almost twenty-five dollars a plate for lunch. The theater has 1,600 hundred seats and a giant stage. There is not a bad seat in the Hilton Theater. Every chair in the theater is within 87 feet of the stage.
The monorail station at the Las Vegas Hilton provides close access to transportation. You can travel the entire length of the strip in less than 15 minutes on the monorail. There are seven monorail stations located along the strip. Security guards use dogs and cameras to monitor the area. Riding the monorail is both safe and convenient. The monorail runs from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. on Monday through Thursday, and 7 a.m. to 3 a.m. on Friday through Sunday. The rates are $5 for one ride, $9 for two rides, $35 for 10 rides, and $40 for a 3-day pass. The air-conditioned monorail is clean and offers a smooth ride above the city.
The Las Vegas Hilton is a good place to stay if you want to be close to the convention center, or if you want an opportunity to golf at the private Las Vegas Country Club.
Hotel reviews: Tradewinds Inn, Carmel, California
Travelers to Carmel-by-the-Sea, the ocean-landscaped retreat on the Monterey Peninsula in central California, have vast and varied accommodation choices.
Quaint bed & breakfast inns to refurbished historic motels, more than 60 options are available in the one-square-mile hamlet.
Ocean Ave. is the city’s main artery, and many of the accommodations are located among or within a few blocks of the epicenter’s diverse collection of shops and restaurants.
This convenience can both add to the enjoyment of visiting Carmel and it can present issues.
Walking is a favorite pastime among locals and tourists. But it’s those same visitors and a steady flow of two-way vehicular traffic that can prove bothersome for guests at the most centrally located accommodations during popular seasons. As such, even in the paradise that is Carmel, convenient hotel parking and quiet rooms are not commonplace.
Through the years, however, Carmel establishments located off-the-beaten path, like Tradewinds Inn, have enticed a loyal following by offering a simple but important formula: quality rooms and service, plentiful parking and serenity.
Nonetheless, after reaching middle age, the Tradewinds Inn needed a makeover. The result is a $4 million renovation (completed in 2004) that transformed the facility into a Asian-influenced inn and place of peace. Susan Stilwell, the daughter of original 1959 owners, Richard and Patricia Catlin, collaborated on the recently completed one-year project with interior designer Charles Gruwell.
Flowing fountains, bamboo screens and tropical plants dominate the centerpiece meditation garden. Custom-designed furniture, multicolored slate floors and accents from Bali and China are prevalent in each of the 28 rooms. The Asian-dominated interior and exterior motif is a family preference. Stilwell’s father collected antiques on his trips to Japan, and some of his collection also decorates the lobby.
The lobby also more resembles the entry way of a spa rather than a hotel reception. Two sentinel-like statues rest on each side of the entry, and the guest check-in area features furnishings and an ambiance similar to room offerings.
While parking is limited or offered for a daily fee in some Carmel accommodation locations, covered and on-street parking in plentiful and free at the Tradewinds Inn.
I stayed in a second-floor deluxe king room with an ocean view during my visit. While not extraordinarily large, the arrangement of the furniture,
Top five tourist attractions in the USA – Part 1
December 29, 2009 by admin
The United States is a vast country. From sea to shining sea you can find mountains, deserts, plains and enough attractions to keep any tourist busy for the rest of their life. Here are my top five attractions.
New York City
The Big Apple has got to be on the top attraction on any tourist’s list when it comes to travel in the United States. It appeals to Americans and also to visitors from around the world. The Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty are landmarks recognized by people everywhere. Broadway, Fifth Avenue and Wall Street are places that have worked their way into everyone’s language. Time Square is the center of the American universe. New York City will appeal to children, adults and seniors; it is a city for everyone. Central Park offers a respite from the skyscrapers and brings a bit of the country mid-town.
With some of the world’s greatest museums and cuisine to temp andy pallate, New York city really is The City That Never Sleeps.
The Grand Canyon
At the other end of the spectrum the Grand Canyon is all about wide open spaces where the only thing you see when you look up are canyon walls and bright blue skies.
When it comes to spectacular scenery, there is nowhere in the United States that can compare to the Grand Canyon. Whether you choose the South Rim or the North Rim, you will have views that are unsurpassed; it is hard to imagine that these colors actually exist in nature. It is even more beautiful than any picture you have ever seen. If you are visiting the north rim it is easy to combine the Canyon with a visit to Sin City, sort of a 2 for 1. You will even feel good about choosing to combine scenery with all the glitz of Las Vegas.
New Orleans
It isn’t just about Mardi Gras in New Orleans. There isn’t another city in the United States like it. The architecture, the jazz , the voodoo and the beignets are all guaranteed to make you fall in love. Walking or driving along the levis holding back the mighty Mississippi makes you realize what a precarious position this city survives in and that makes New Orleans all the more precious and unique.
The historic parts of the city were almost untouched by Katrina but it is the rebuilding of this great city that is bringing many tourists back to Nawlins. Don’t wait for Mardi Gras, this is a city that is at its best all year round.
Charlottesville, Va.
While this city may not be on every tourist’s radar, it should be. Three of our presidents found it charming enough to make it their home. The most famous former resident is Thomas Jefferson, who helped design the University of Virginia, which is also located in Charlottesville. He built his famous home Monticello here and today you can visit it as well as the homes of James Madison and James Monroe. Charlottesville has all the vibes of a college town and more.
Philadelphia, Pa.
There is no city that is more representative of what the Unites States is all about than Philadelphia. Ben Franklin is probably one of the best known Americans to have ever lived. History, art, entertainment and plenty of outdoor activities guarantee that you can visit here every year and never get bored. Philadelphia has undergone a renaissance and it is the place to really feel the pulse of historic America.
These are just a few of my favorite attractions in the United States. You could spend a lifetime seeing everything this wonderful country has to offer. From east to west, north to south, there are attractions to appeal to every tourist from every country and of course if none of these appeal there is always Orlando or Anaheim.

Driving and parking in New York City
December 29, 2009 by admin

So, you’ve decided, probably against the wishes of your family and friends; that you are going to drive into New York City for the very first time. You are clearly determined, motivated, and hopefully have bullied a few cars out of the way on the local highway as practice. But driving around New York City is about more than being psyched to go bumper to bumper with a taxi. You have to know the rules.
First things first, as you hopefully already know, Manhattan is an island. Remember those beans from history class? Exactly. This little fact will save your sanity when driving in Manhattan nine out of ten times. Why, you ask? Because, as long as you do not leave the island you cannot get that lost. If you are on the island and go over a bridge or through a tunnel all bets are off, but if you stay on the island, I promise you’ll be all right. As long as you have a compass and a map you can always stage a hasty retreat to the side of the road to get your bearings again.
Now that we’ve agreed you’ll avoid bridges and tunnels at all costs; a little bit about the layout of the city. Most streets in New York City are one-way. But before you cry lost; generally if you’re north of Union Square/14th street the streets are on a numbered grid courtesy of those lovely 1800s city planners with silly mustaches. Additionally, again above 14th street, these streets also, generally, follow some rules. Remember to match your O’s and E’s, Odd avenues run South, Even streets run East. If you decide you want to wander down into the trendy, delicious restaurant heaven that is the village, smell the smells of the Chinatown markets, or see the famed financial district, be warned, even with directions you will likely get turned around. There are always street fairs, construction and heavy traffic congestion all over the city. Make sure that you have specific directions to where you are going especially when traveling off the grid, a compass, and a good street map i.e. one written in English with all the streets named with arrows to indicate the direction of traffic, it’s useless otherwise.
The final step in the journey of driving in New York City is the task of parking the car. This can be much more challenging than the actually driving especially if you don’t want to pay a fortune. If you have money to spend and are in the midtown area parking garages are the way to go. Your car is safe, you’ll be able to find it again and it can’t get towed. But take care and read the posted rates.
