New York City; it’s the largest city in the world isn’t it? I was there one time. I went with my wife, our two kids and my wife’s brother and his wife. We all piled into an old station wagon and drove from Michigan to New York. This is when a station wagon meant a wagon. It was a 1965 Ford and the inside was bigger than some people’s bedroom.

We were very comfortable on our ride. I went out there looking for work and everyone decided to go just for the trip. We were in New York. Quite an experience. We didn’t have time to do the things you would think someone would want to do if they were in New York City but we did learn how to do several very important things. I have selected five things you should be prepared to do when visiting New York City.

10) WAIT: This is something you will be doing a great deal of so get used to it. You need to perfect a very good waiting game. You will need to wait for all the other cars to cut in front of you as you are trying to maneuver through the tunnels. You also need to wait for the hordes of people passing by so you can get a good step start. Going to a down town restaurant? That’s right, wait.

9) LOOK: While you are waiting take a look around you. Be very observant. Notice the people around you; how are they looking at you? Keep a sharp eye out for any potential hiding places. Try to find a policeman, just in case. You won’t see one but look anyway. Keep your surroundings in view at all times. Never back up or turn your body around before you turn your head around. Always look where you are going.

DON’T LOOK: Now that you have the art of looking down, don’t look. Don’t make eye contact with anyone. Don’t look at the guy with three half dressed women on his arms. Don’t look at the black man sloppily making out with the white tramp on the side of the road. Don’t look at the guy changing his tires, on the sidewalk. Definitely do not look at the three men dressed in black snappy suits and wide brim Stetsons. Just don’t look.

7) SHUT UP: Remember, you don’t have anything to say so keep it to yourself. You are not back home you don’t have to say hi to everybody. In fact, you don’t want to say hi to anyone. They don’t understand that word out there. Either you will be made to feel bad because they will totally ignore you or you will be made to feel worse because they will rattle off a mouthful of expletives. Either way, shut up!
